The history of Mardi Gras is complex. Catholic leniency juxtaposed to a history that normalized segregation and oppression — it’s a nonlinear dynamic. In the truest sense of irony, Mardi Gras in The French Quarter presents itself quite differently than Mardi Gras (carnival) in adjacent neighborhoods. Where one embraces debauchery, vulgarities, and vices, the contrary celebrates history and traditions. The diptychs explore the stereotypes, the narratives, and accepted notions associated with each.
