FRAMING AFROISMS

Lu Smith is a multidisciplinary artist whose photographic works examine contemporary ambulations of Blackness with an effort to address its nuanced histories, retentions, and interconnectedness; those of which are often overshadowed by western pathologies.

Throughout his work and research, Smith highlights the celebrations, joys and magic within Black communities throughout the Caribbean and United States, offering seldom-acknowledged viewpoints. To this, his methodology aligns to the long form essayist; an opportunity for Smith to observe, question, and listen, empathetically, to his subject matter with a soft heart and a sharper eye.

From celebratory moments to hidden cultural truths, Smith’s eye ascertains a mindfulness of the gods of small things within his practice and creation of his works.

He is currently based in Atlanta, Georgia.
